Meet Josh

There's a lot going on right now, from the federal occupation by ICE, to elections for public office up and down the ballot. But if you're the kind of person who also cares about the weird nerds who run for party office, I have an announcement - I'm running for CD5 DFL Chair.

My weird nerd cred is as follows: I know how to run meetings and I know how all the complex pieces of the party work. I serve on CBRC and I am a professional parliamentarian. I also serve as the SD62 DFL Secretary.

I also know the campaign side, having served as Treasurer for two City Council campaigns and a mayoral campaign.

I've only been a party officer since 2024, but I've been drinking from the fire hose that whole time. And those who know me know that I put in the work.

I was also a weird nerd making spreadsheets years before my formal involvement in the party, and I've learned that being a weird nerd making spreadsheets is a surprisingly large part of both the DFL and political campaigns.

The DFL is a big tent. But we have more we agree on than we disagree on. We believe in affordable housing, healthcare for all, and feeding hungry kids. We believe in an economy that works for the middle class, not just for billionaires. And we believe that immigrants make our country stronger, not weaker.

We’re still going to disagree on things, and that’s okay. But we need to come together. Because we need all of us. This is not the time to be pushing anyone out - it is the time to be bringing folks in. My hope is to bring us together, so we can win in November.

I hope to meet with more of you at convention tomorrow to talk about how we can work together.

I’m also pleased to announce my running mate. Deb Ford has been SD61 DFL Treasurer for the past nine years. She's been one of the driving forces behind SD61, and was on the team that made the "Taste the Trifecta" cookbook and fundraiser happen.

Deb has long been one of the unsung heroes of the DFL in Minneapolis. She's no nonsense and puts in the work. She's well-respected across the party. And she's helped to mentor many newer DFL leaders.

I couldn't ask for a better candidate for my CD5 Vice Chair. I hope you'll join me in supporting the Martin/Ford ticket at the CD5 Convention in May.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. I hope to earn your support. Have a great caucus and convention season.

Meet Deb

I’ve been the treasurer of SD61 DFL for nine years, and I’ve actually enjoyed it. If that’s not nerd cred, I don’t know what is. During my 2017 onboarding conversation with the outgoing chair and treasurer I was told that “treasurer is the only DFL job that can land you in jail.” I have managed to stay out of jail, and also out of trouble with the Campaign Finance Board folks, who have always been helpful and friendly when I needed them. I’ve served on the CD5 budget committee and the MN DFL budget committee, as well.

I’m very proud to have been part of the team that put together our highly acclaimed community cookbook “Taste the Trifecta.” (We have a few copies left, and you could have one for the low low price of just $20. Hit me up.)

I’ve learned an enormous amount about the details of event planning for caucuses, conventions, and fundraisers, and have put that knowledge into action. When we needed a caucus convener in February I parachuted in and ran the caucus for another precinct. This year I also attended or convened all five SD61 pre-convention committees. I’m typing this during a break in counting  594 resolutions ballots. (The DFL needs a better process for resolutions.)

I started participating in elections as an election judge for the primary that happened September 11, 2001, and have worked in almost every election since then, at several locations around the city. Nerd cred: I like to brag that I’ve leveled up to Registration and Pollbook Specialist, and am always amazed at how interesting the election judge training is. Not kidding.

I have a long, clean record of never voting for a Republican. Not once.

In my day job I’m a psychologist. I’ve been lucky to have lots of training and experience in group therapy, and none in Robert’s Rules of Order. When Josh and I first talked about being running mates, it started with me asking him if RRoO allowed for a position called something like Civility Officer, which had the same kind of power as the parliamentarian. I was only half kidding. He took the question very seriously, and I learned about “decorum.” That conversation evolved into a shared desire to work to reduce intra-party strife and internecine warfare, and instead put our time and energy into winning elections against Republicans. It’s the only fight that matters. Underneath the labels that divide our party, there is enormous agreement about that. The DFL can only win through coalition. That’s what is meant by the “big tent” idea. And so we’re a coalition ticket.

Meet Deb: If it’s important to you to know what’s important to me when I vote, I’m happy to have a conversation about that. Maybe you’ll be surprised. Under the veneer of ladylike decorum, I’m ferociously political. You can reach me at debford@mac.com.
